St. Petersburg, since its founding in 1703, was built in accordance with the General Plan, adopted by the Russian Emperor Peter I, who had decided to regulate the construction of the city, in contrast to the spontaneously proliferating around the fortresses of Russian and European cities at that time. Peter I invited the best domestic and foreign builders and architects, who used the world experience and advanced construction technology of the time, to put in motion Peter’s ideas.

spb02Descendants of the monarch-reformer continued his beginnings, and today St. Petersburg is a treasure house of architectural monuments of Baroque and Classicism, Empire and Art Nouveau. More than 4 million of outstanding monuments of history, architecture and culture of St. Petersburg are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site. This applies not only to the historic city center, but also to the palace and park complexes of city’s suburbs: Peterhof, Oranienbaum, Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo), Pavlovsk, Gatchina, Strelna and series of historical and cultural monuments.
